Secure your passwords

Passwords are the first line of defense against cyber criminals. It’s crucial to pick strong passwords that are different for each of your important accounts and it is good practice to update your passwords regularly. Follow these tips to create strong passwords and keep them secure.contact us *866*324-3042 for Gmail customer service

Use a unique password for each of your important accounts like email and online banking

Choosing the same password for each of your online accounts is like using the same key to lock your home, car and office – if a criminal gains access to one, all of them are compromised. So don’t use the same password for an online newsletter as you do for your email or bank account. It may be less convenient, but picking multiple passwords keeps you safer.

Keep your passwords in a secret place that isn’t easily visible

Writing down your passwords isn’t necessarily a bad idea. But if you do this, don’t leave notes with your passwords in plain sight, on your computer or desk.

Use a long password made up of numbers, letters and symbols

The longer your password is, the harder it is to guess. So make your password long to help keep your information safe. Adding numbers, symbols and mixed-case letters makes it harder for would-be snoops or others to guess or crack your password. Please don’t use ‘123456’ or ‘password,’ and avoid using publicly available information like your phone number in your passwords. It’s not very original, and it isn’t very safe!

Try using a phrase that only you know

One idea is to think of a phrase that only you know, and make it be related to a particular website to help you remember it. For your email you could start with “My friends Tom and Jasmine send me a funny email once a day” and then use numbers and letters to recreate it. “MfT&Jsmafe1ad” is a password with lots of variations. Then repeat this process for other sites.

Set up your password recovery options and keep them up-to-date

If you forget your password or get locked out, you need a way to get back into your account. Many services will send an email to you at a recovery email address if you need to reset your password, so make sure your recovery email address is up-to-date and an account you can still access.

Sometimes you can also add a phone number to your profile to receive a code to reset your password via text message. Having a mobile phone number on your account is one of the easiest and most reliable ways to help keep your account safe.

For example, service providers can use the phone number to challenge those who try to break into your account, and can send you a verification code so you can get into your account if you ever lose access. Giving a recovery phone number to Google won’t result in you being signed up for marketing lists or getting more calls from telemarketers.

Your mobile phone is a more secure identification method than your recovery email address or a security question because, unlike the other two, you have physical possession of your mobile phone.
However, if you can’t or don’t want to add a phone number to your account, many websites may ask you to choose a question to verify your identity in case you forget your password. If the service you’re using allows you to create your own question, try to come up with a question that has an answer only you would know and isn’t something that you’ve posted about publicly or shared on social media.

Try to find a way to make your answer unique but memorable – you can do this by using the tip above – so that even if someone guesses the answer, they won’t know how to enter it properly. This answer is very important for you to remember – if you forget it you may never be able to get back into your account.

Check your last account activity

You can see your sign-in history, including the dates and times that your Gmail account was used. You can also see the IP addresses which were used to access your account.Call *866*324-3042 for Gmail customer service

See your account activity

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. In the bottom right, click Details.
Tip: You can also visit the Recent security events page to see security updates for your entire Google Account.

Information shown on the "Last account activity" page

The Last account activity page shows your sign-in records, and includes the information below.
In the "Concurrent session information" section, you'll see if you're signed in to Gmail on another device, browser, or location.
To sign out of all sessions except the one you have open in front of you, click Sign out all other web sessions.
In the "Access type" section, you'll see the browser, device, or mail server (like POP or IMAP) that you accessed Gmail from.
You can see the last 10 IP addresses and approximate locations that accessed your Gmail account.
If you got a warning about suspicious activity in your account, you might also see up to 3 additional IP addresses that have been labeled as suspicious.
There are a few reasons you may see multiple IP addresses or locations in your activity:
  • If you use POP or IMAP to read your mail on other services, like Apple Mail or Microsoft Outlook, this location information will be included, too.
  • If you use Mail Fetcher, a Google IP will show up because your messages are being fetched through a Google server.
  • If you use Gmail on a phone or tablet, your Internet service or mobile carrier's location may show up. This may be a location far from where you are. As long as the name of the carrier matches yours, this isn't unusual.

Troubleshoot problems

If you don't recognize the activity on the page, like a location or access type, someone might have access to your account because of phishing or malware.
  1. Immediately change your password.
  2. Follow the Gmail security tips to help protect your account.
We strongly advise leaving alerts on so you can hear about suspicious activity on your account. If you still want to disable alerts, follow the steps below.
Note: It takes about a week for alerts to get turned off. This is because Gmail wants to confirm it's you that's turning them off, and not someone else who might have access to your account.
  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. In the bottom right, click Details.
  3. At the bottom of the page next to "Alert preference," click Change.
  4. Select Never show an alert for unusual activity.

Safer links in Gmail

To help protect you from viruses, malware, phishing and spam, Gmail scans links in incoming messages. Call *866*324-3042 for third party Gmail customer service

When you click a link in an email message, Gmail checks the link and lets you know if it might lead to a suspicious site. Sometimes attackers include links in emails which lead to sites that might steal your personal information, so Gmail runs this check to protect you and will warn you if it finds something potentially dangerous.
If you trust the linked website, you can ignore the warning and proceed to the site.
This only works when you use Gmail from a browser.

Gmail security tips

Creating a strong password

To keep your account safe, here are a few tips on how to create a strong password:
Use a different password for each of your important accounts, like your email and online banking accounts. Re-using passwords is risky. If someone figures out your password for one account, it's possible they could get access to your personal information, or other online services like shopping or banking.

Using numbers, symbols and mix of upper and lower case letters in your password makes it harder for someone to guess your password. For example, an eight-character password with numbers, symbols and mixed-case letters is harder to guess because it has 30,000 times as many possible combinations than an eight-character password with only lower case letters.\ Call us *866*324-3042 for Gmail customer service

Create a unique password that's unrelated to your personal information and uses a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. For example, you can select a random word or phrase and insert letters and numbers into the beginning, middle, and end to make it extra difficult to guess (such as "sPo0kyh@ll0w3En"). Don’t use simple words or phrases like "password" or "letmein," keyboard patterns such as "qwerty" or "qazwsx," or sequential patterns such as "abcd1234" which make your password easier to guess.

Update your recovery email address regularly so that you can receive emails in case you need to reset your password. You can also add a phone number to receive password reset codes via text message.
Many websites will also give you the option of answering a security question if you forget your password. If you create your own question, try to come up with one that has an answer only you would know. The answer shouldn't be something that someone can guess by scanning information you've posted on blogs or social networking sites.
If you are asked to choose a question from a list, like the city where you were born, try to find a way to make your answer unique by using some of the tips above. That way even if someone guesses the answer, they won't know how to enter it correctly.

Don't leave notes with your passwords to various sites on your computer or desk, where people can easily steal them and use them to compromise your accounts. If you choose to save passwords in a file on your computer, create a name for the file that won't give it away. If you have a difficult time remembering multiple passwords, use a trusted password manager. Be sure to spend a few minutes checking out reviews and reputations of password manager services.

Add an extra layer of security

Once you’ve created a password, you can add an extra layer of security by enabling 2-Step Verification. 2-Step Verification requires you to have access to your phone, as well as your username and password, when you sign in to your Google Account. This means that if someone steals or guesses your password, they still can't sign in to your account because they don't have your phone. Now you can protect yourself with something you know (your password) and something you have (your phone).

Keep your account secure

At Google, we take account security very seriously. To protect your account, we strongly recommend following the steps below regularly, especially if you notice changes to your account that you didn’t make.

If you think your account has been compromised, reset Gmail password immediately.

Make your Google Account more secure

Run a scan on your computer with a trusted anti-virus software. If the scan detects any suspicious programs or applications, remove them immediately. Read more at the Google Safety Center.
Go to the My Account page. In the "Security Checkup" section, select Get Started and follow the on-screen instructions to check your account security.
Check that your account recovery options are up-to-date.
2-Step Verification adds an extra layer of security to your account by requiring you to sign in with something you know (your password) and something you have (a code sent to your phone).
Make sure you've set your computer to update automatically. If you get a notice to update, take care of it right away.
If you enter your password in an external website and it's compromised, someone could try to sign in to your Google Account with the same information. Make sure to change your Google Account password.
Never enter your password after following a link in an email from an untrusted site. Always go directly to mail.google.com or accounts.google.com/Login.
Don't write it down, send it via email, or tell anyone. Google will never email you to ask for your password or other sensitive information.
  • Always sign out of your account. Just click your name or email address at the top of the page, and select Sign out.
  • Clear forms, passwords, cache, and cookies in your browser on a regular basis.
Note: You should perform these steps more frequently if you begin to notice suspicious behavior in your computer, such as general slowness and pop-up advertisements. For more tips about online safety, visit Google's Safety Center

Someone is sending emails from a spoofed address

Your Gmail account might be spoofed if you get bounce messages for emails that look like they were sent from your account, or if you get a reply to a message you never sent. Gmail customer service phone number *866*324-3042

How email spoofing happens

When you send an email, a sender name is attached to the message. However, the sender name can be forged.
When spoofing happens, your address can be used as the sender address or the reply-to address.

Troubleshoot spoofing problems

Why this happens

Some spammers use software programs to create random lists of email addresses to use in spoofing.
If a spammer spoofs your Gmail address, you might get reports of delivery failures for emails that look like they were sent by you.

How to fix the problem

Because these emails are created outside of Gmail, Gmail isn't able to stop the spammers from spoofing your address.
If you get these kinds of emails, report them as spam.

Why this happens

Some spammers try to send emails with a fake "from" address. Spammers hope that if the email looks like it was sent from your address, it won't get marked as spam.
If you see an email in Spam that replaces your email address with "me," someone tried to put your address in the "From" field of the message.

Best practices for forwarding mail to Gmail

If you're forwarding mail to Gmail, you may want to ensure that mail will be correctly classified by the Gmail spam filter. Check out the sections below for tips on how to optimize Gmail's spam-filtering capabilities. Call *866*324-3042 for Gmail customer service

If you're a mail server administrator:

Ownership and Filtering

We recommend that you do not change the envelope sender when forwarding email to Gmail. Sometimes, when forwarding email, the envelope sender gets changed to your domain. When this happens, Gmail may learn that your domain is sending spam, and will treat other emails from this domain as spam as well.
Please note that procmail is one of the most common reasons why the envelope sender gets changed when forwarding. Adding the following to your config file will fix this issue:
SENDER=`formail -c -x Return-Path`
SENDMAILFLAGS="-oi -f $SENDER"
Alternatively, changing the envelope sender is ok if you do one of the following:
  • Put "SPAM" in the subject
  • OR discard any spam emails and not forward them to Gmail at all.
SpamAssassin is a free spam filter that can be used for identifying spam outside of Gmail, and putting "SPAM" in the subject.

Authentication

  • Do not modify, remove or shuffle message headers or modify the body of the message. DKIM or DomainKeys signatures will break if the body is altered, and all authentication information will be lost.
  • Common DKIM breakages include modifying the mime boundaries, anti-virus or anti-spam programs modifying the body of the message, expanding the message recipient using LDAP, and re-encoding the message.
  • Several highly-phished domains have asked Gmail to enforce strict authentication checks on their mail. These domains include eBay, Paypal, and Google. If your mail server modifies the forwarded messages from these domains, these messages will be marked as phishing.
  • One symptom of this problem is that a messages from these domains forwarded through your mail server to Gmail will have an Authentication-Results header that show that DKIM did not pass, while messages sent directly to Gmail will have a passing signature.

If you're not a mail server administrator, but use your mail provider's forwarding services:

  • We recommend modifying your forwarding settings to ensure that spam is not forwarded to Gmail. If you are unable to modify your forwarding settings, we recommend contacting the administrator of your mail service provider for further instructions.
  • Go to your Mail settings and Accounts tab and add the address you are forwarding from to 'Send mail as'. This is a new feature from user requests, where Gmail will detect that you forwarded from that account and help prevent displaying a phishing warning.

Reduce the size of your photos & videos

Choose a storage size

You can choose between 2 storage sizes to back up your photos and videos to your Google Photos library. Call *866*324-3042 for Gmail customer service

High quality

  • Unlimited free storage.
  • Regular cameras: Recommended for phones or point-and-shoot cameras that are 16 megapixels (MP) or less.
  • Uses: Good for typical printing and sharing.
  • Size: Saves high-quality photos and videos while reducing size.

Original

  • Limited free storage: Uses storage in your Google Account, regardless of photo or video size.
  • DSLR cameras: Recommended if you take photos with a DSLR camera and want to maintain the exact original quality.
  • Uses: Recommended for printing large banners or to store original files.
  • Size: Stores your photos and videos exactly as you captured them.
  • If you use a Pixel phone, you get free unlimited storage at original quality. You won't be able to back up your photos and videos in high quality.

Frequently asked questions

Most phone cameras are less than 16 megapixels (like iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy phones), so most stored photos will essentially look the same if you choose High quality.
High quality photos can be up to 16 megapixels (MP) in size. You can print good quality 16 MP photos in sizes up to 24 inches x 16 inches, which is larger than typical printing sizes.
You can change this setting any time by going to the Settings page in the Google Photos app or photos.google.com/settings.
Changing the setting will affect storage sizes going forward and won't resize items you've already stored.
  • If the camera takes photos with 16 megapixels (MP) resolution or lower, most stored photos will essentially look the same using either storage option.
  • If the camera takes photos with a resolution higher than 16 MP, then photos will be downsized to 16 MP.
  • If the video is 1080p or less, your stored video will look close to the original.
  • If the video is higher than 1080p, then it will be reduced to high-definition 1080p.

Purchase, cancellation, & refund policies of Google

Automatic renewals

By default, your storage purchase is set to automatically renew at the end of your subscription. At any point during your subscription, you can upgrade to a larger storage plan. You'll be upgraded to your new storage level immediately, and your credit card will be charged when you run out of credit.
If you purchased a storage subscription under the old pricing plan, you can renew your subscription until you choose to upgrade or until your payment information expires. Cal us @ *866*324-3042 for Gmail customer service

If the auto-renewal fails, a seven-day grace period will be added to your subscription so that you're able to update your payment information. During this grace period, you won't lose access to anything in your Google Account or your current storage plan.

If you use Gmail and the auto-renewal fails, your storage plan will be extended for 30 days and you'll have seven days to update your payment information. You can use those extra 30 days to clear space in your account or buy a new storage plan.

If your storage plan is canceled or expires

If you cancel your storage plan or when your storage plan expires, your storage limits will reset to the free levels for each product at the end of your billing cycle. Everything in Google Drive, Google Photos, and Gmail will still be accessible, but you won't be able to create or add anything new over the free storage limit. If you reach or exceed the free storage limit:
  • Google Drive: You won't be able to sync or upload new files, and syncing between your Google Drive folder and My Drive will stop. You'll still be able to create Google documents since they don't take up any storage space.
  • Google Photos: You'll only be able to upload new photos and videos stored at High quality.
  • Gmail: Incoming messages to your account will be returned to the sender.

Cancel your subscription

You can cancel your storage subscription at any time.
  1. Go to https://www.google.com/settings/storage.
  2. Sign into the Google Account for which you purchased storage.
  3. Your account will show in the left-hand box. Click Cancel plan.
  4. Review changes to storage that will take place after cancellation and then click Cancel plan.
  5. You'll receive a confirmation email of your subscription cancellation. On the start of the next month of your plan, you'll be downgraded to the free storage levels for Google Drive, Google Photos, and Gmail.

Refund policy

Google Drive storage plan purchases are non-refundable. The amount of storage you purchased is yours for the length of the subscription, even if you decide to cancel it.

Receiving someone else’s mail

You aren't getting codes by text or phone call.

If you chose to receive codes by text message, make sure your service plan and mobile device support text message delivery. Delivery speed and availability may vary by location and service provider. If text message delivery is slow, try using the phone call option. If you have a smartphone, we recommend you use the Google Authenticator app .Call us @ *866*324-3042 for Gmail customer service

Other ways to get codes

If you're still not receiving your codes via text message or phone call, there are several other ways you can get into your account. This depends primarily on whether you set up a backup phone, recorded your backup codes, or both, when you set up 2-Step Verification.
If you set up a backup phone, you can choose to have your code sent to your backup phone. If you recorded your backup codes, you can use any of your remaining backup codes as a code at sign-in. These are your two quickest options and take a few minutes to complete.
If you haven't set up backup options, follow the Account recovery steps for help getting back in to your account.

Sign in faster with 2-Step Verification phone prompts

I turned on 2-Step Verification and an app on my phone or computer stopped working

Signing in with 2-Step Verification is easy. (Contact us (866) 324-3042 for third party Gmail customer service)

  1. Go to the sign-in page and enter your username and password like you normally do.
  2. Then you’ll be asked for a six-digit code, which you'll get from your phone. If you want, when you enter your code, you can choose to trust your computer -- this means you won't be asked for a code again when you sign in from this computer. If you sign in from another computer, however, you’ll be asked for a code.
3.After you turn on 2-Step Verification, non-browser applications and devices that use your Google Account (such as the Gmail app on your phone or Outlook), will be unable to connect to your account. However, in a few steps, you can generate a special password called application-specific password to allow this application to connect to your account -- and don't worry, you'll only have to do this once for each device or application.

We can cancel and remove an account at our discretion and might not provide notice.
