If you think your Gmail account has been compromised, reset your
Gmail password immediately.
How to make your Gmail account more secure
Run a scan on your system with a trusted anti-virus program. If the scan
detects any suspicious activity (program) or applications, you should remove
them immediately. Read more at the Gmail Safety Center.
Go to the My Gmail Account
page. In the "Security Checkup" tab, select Get Started
and follow the on-screen instructions to check your Gmail account security.
Check that your email account recovery options are up-to-date.
2-Step
Verification adds an extra layer of security to your Gmail account by
requiring you to sign in with something you know (your Gmail password) and
something you have (a code sent to your phone).
Make sure you've set your system to update automatically. If you get a Gmail
notice to update, take care of it right away.
If you enter your account password in an external website and it's compromised,
someone could try to log in to your Gmail Account with the same information.
Make sure to change
your Gmail account password.
Never enter your account password after following a link in an email from an
untrusted web site. Always go directly to email.google.com or
accounts.google.com/Login.
Don't write it down, send it via email, or tell me anyone. Google will never
email you to ask for your account password or other sensitive information of
your Gmail account.
- Always log out of your Gmail account. Just click your name or email address at the top of the web page, and click to select Sign out.
- Clear forms, Gmail passwords, cache, and cookies in your web browser on a regular basis.
Note: You should perform these steps more frequently if you
begin to notice suspicious behavior in your system, such as general slowness
and pop-up advertisements. For more tips about online safety, visit Google's Safety
Center.
